Coming out of a global pandemic has altered everyone’s perception of how they would like to work. Maybe you’re thinking about transitioning your career to work at a nonprofit organization (NPO). Are your corporate skills transferable? The National Executive Service Corps (NESC) was founded by corporate executives to bring business skills to nonprofit organizations and we’ve got a few tips to aid your transition.
Tip 1. Get Nonprofit Experience on Your Resume
- How do you know nonprofit work is a good fit for you? NESC itself is a nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable management consulting to other nonprofits. All its consultants are volunteers most of whom have already made the transition you’re exploring. Whether it’s working at NESC or another NPO, find an organization to experience nonprofit work.
Tip 2. Learn through DOING
- The most significant assets to NPOs are those who have recent experience actively working on projects or “doing.” NPOs are lean staffed and value those who can work both independently and in teams. By volunteering to an NPO, you can sharpen your business skills while learning about nonprofit management.
Tip 3. Reconnect with and Expand Your Network
- NPOs rely on multiple sources of funding ranging from grants, service fees and donations. An extensive, active network that can open doors is precious to NPOs. Get busy mining your network to discover nonprofit opportunities.
